Fall Prevention Program

Fraser Health Senior Fall and Injury Prevention Team

Fabio Feldman, manager of Fall and Injury Prevention Team, was on House Calls on CKNW (Vancouver, BC, Canada radio show). Fabio leads a mobile unit that goes to seniors to educate them on preventing falls. For example they go to senior centre with a full multidisciplinary team. They set up six stations with a pharmacist, dietitian, biomechanical expert, Kinesiologist (Expert in the science of human physical movement.), physical therapist and nurse. They perform a fall risk assessment measuring strength, balance, proprioception, vision and reaction time.

Few stats on fall:

- 1 in 3 senior will experience a fall each year.
- For seniors in residential care it rises to 50%
- In Canada we spend over a billion dollars on fall related injuries
- The leading injury with a fall are hip fracture which costs the Canadian medical system $18, 000 to treat.
- 1 in 4 people will die within six months of a hip fracture due to complication of the hip fracture.
