B.C. students Health and Well-being is Improving, Report Says
Vancouver Sun - April 04, 2008
The health and well-being of B.C. students is improving with fewer young people smoking, drinking alcohol, using cannabis or having sex, the provincial health officer says today in a release. But there are also negatives, including growing numbers of students with weight problems, anxiety disorders and sexually transmitted diseases, Dr. Perry Kendall says in a report titled: An Ounce of Prevention Revisited: A Review of Health Promotion and Selected Outcomes for Children and Youth in B.C. Schools.
"Healthy students are better learners and those with a better education are healthier," Kendall says in a release that heaps praise on programs such as Healthy Schools and ActNow BC but also calls on schools to develop a more comprehensive approach to promoting health.
