If You Think Doing Rowing Exercises Works the Scapular Stabilizers, You are WRONG!

I see it time and time again, fitness professionals taking their shoulder clients to the seated row free weight machine.

I hear them saying that when you do this exercise, you are working the rhomboids and middle trapezius.

Sorry to say, this is WRONG.

If poor posture (rounded forward posture) lengthens the middle trapezius and leads to middle trapezius being in a poor length-tension relationship, doing the exact opposite of poor posture does not help the middle trapezius function better.

In a rowing movement you are retracting the scapula and extending the glenohumeral joint. This puts the shoulder complex into a military posture. Now the middle trapezius is in a shortened position and can't perform its function. Hey, the lats and rhomboids are working but not the middle trapezius.

No worries, I didn't know this either.

When I was going through university and working with all kinds of physical therapists, they told me the seated row free weight machine worked the middle trapezius.

Now I know better.
