Drinking, Athletes and Water
"Who is the research for?"
In any race you have:
- People that are going to win
- Those that are going to place
- Those that are focusing on finishing
- Those that have to stop the race
- Those watching the race
The remarks of Dr. Noakes apply to the first to groups but not the last three.
Time to drink? When you're thirsty
Expert frowns on guidelines that urge drinking 'ahead of your thirst'
Jill Barker, Canwest News ServicePublished: Monday, November 17, 2008
For some years now, we have been told to drink ahead of our thirst, as it was felt that the urge to drink lagged behind the body's actual need for water. It turns out that advice might have been without merit. World renowned researcher Tim Noakes, a physician, exercise physiologist and marathoner, states that thirst is actually one of the best indicators of when to drink.

Slow Down or You Will Get Fat
How much you eat.
Now, how fast you eat is important.
Speedy Eaters Seen Likelier to Get Fat
October 22, 2008 - Reuters
People who eat quickly until full are three times more likely to be overweight, a problem exacerbated by the availability of fast food and the decline of orderly dining habits, Japanese researchers said on Wednesday.
The findings, published in the British Medical Journal, highlight how eating styles, and not just what or how much is eaten, can contribute to an obesity epidemic fueled by the spread of Western-style affluence in many parts of the world.
The World Health Organization classifies around 400 million people as obese, 20 million of them under the age of five. The condition raises the risk of diseases like type 2 diabetes and heart problems.

7% of People Experience Caffeine Intoxication
With more and more food products containing caffeine, more people are experiencing caffeine intoxication.
Soon enough, we all will be addicted to caffeine.
Hey! Who Put the Caffeine in My Soap?
Oct. 20, 2008 - Time - By John Cloud Monday
Most adults know how many cups of coffee they can have before they get twitchy. We're a race of well-practiced, high-functioning junkies. After all, regular human consumption of caffeine began at least 2,000 years ago, and until recently there was no reason to think our little global addiction posed any threat.
The trend started with super-caffeinated energy drinks in the '90s, but more recently scientists and marketers have created caffeinated foods and even personal-hygiene products. In the past five years, according to the market research giant Mintel, firms have launched at least 126 caffeinated food products for sale in the U.S. Twenty-nine such products have been introduced this year alone. The offerings include things like Morning Spark oatmeal, NRG potato chips and — my favorite, if only for the brazen attempt to draw kids into caffeine culture — Jelly Belly's Extreme Sport Beans, which the company calls "Energizing Jelly Beans." You can also now buy caffeinated toiletries like Bath Buzz Caffeinated Lotion.
Public-health officials are worried about the new products for two reasons: first, people might simply add the new products to their typical ration of coffee or tea. That could increase their risk for caffeine intoxication, a condition that causes symptoms like nervousness, insomnia, tachycardia and psychomotor agitation. Caffeine intoxication is not uncommon: according to a 1998 study in the journal Drug and Alcohol Dependence, 7% of caffeine users have experienced it. The symptoms usually abate quickly when people quit caffeine, but in rare cases the symptoms can lead to death.

Fructose Anyone?
Is High-Fructose Corn Syrup Really Good for You?
Time - September 17, 2008 - By Lisa McLaughlin
Shopping last week in her local New York City grocery store, Elise Mackin, 32, filled her cart with items she knows to be good for her family — whole grains, fruits and veggies — and shied away from products that contained less wholesome ingredients. "Trans fats are out," she said, "and anything with high-fructose corn syrup."
The American Medical Association recently announced at its annual policy-making meeting in Chicago that high-fructose corn syrup does not contribute more to obesity than sugar or other caloric sweeteners. Even Michael Jacobson, executive director of the Center for Science in the Public Interest, has to agree. He criticized early versions of the CRA's ad campaign for its claims that high-fructose corn syrup is a "natural" product. "High-fructose corn syrup starts out as cornstarch, which is chemically or enzymatically degraded to glucose and some short polymers of glucose. Another enzyme is then used to convert varying fractions of glucose into fructose," says Jacobson. "High-fructose corn syrup just doesn't exist in nature." But he admits that the sweetener gets a bum rap. "The special harmfulness of high-fructose corn syrup has become one of those urban myths that sounds right, but is basically wrong. Nutritionally, high-fructose corn syrup and sucrose may be identical."

Want to Lose Weight? Change Your Plates!
A specially designed plate can help you control portions and lose weight
The Windsor Star - September 29, 2007 - by Grace Macaluso
Have trouble figuring out how much to eat? A ceramic diet plate that delineates proper portion sizes for meats, starches and vegetables could be the solution.
The Diet Plate was first invented by a British woman more than 10 years ago, but now a University of Calgary study says it has clinical proof that the portion plate can help obese people lose weight and help diabetics curb their use of drugs.
"Often people don't want to give up anything, so you say, 'How about if you switch to a smaller plate and you don't go back for seconds?' " says University of Windsor Kinesiologist Kenji Kenno.
