Kinesiologist Off to Beijing Olympics

Former Islander Carries Canada's Velodrome Hopes

After edging Olympic-medallist Alison Sydor at the wire in downtown Victoria to win the 1999 Bastion Square Criterium women's cycling race, then little-known Gina Grain was taken aback when a fan asked to take her picture.

"You're kidding?," Grain exclaimed at the time.

"Alison and them are use to something like this, but not me."

Grain, a registered kinesiologist, used to work in exercise therapy and rehab programs at Saanich Commonwealth Place but is now a full-time cyclist. She remains adept on the road as well and just missed the podium at the 2006 Melbourne Commonwealth Games with fourth place finishes in both the road race and velodrome points race.
