December 12, 2007 — A new British study has found that total amount of
exercise may be more important than intensity of activity for lowering blood
pressure (BP) in children [1]. The results are reported online today in
Hypertension.
Lead author Dr Sam Leary (University of Bristol, UK) told heartwire: "This
large contemporary study is unique because it is one of the few to use an
activity monitor, which provides a more accurate, objective measure of
physical activity." Previous studies in children have all employed
questionnaires to ascertain exercise habits, which seem to provide a poor
measure of activity, she said. This is also the first research to compare
the amount of exercise with the intensity of exercise, she noted.
