The Muscle Imbalance Epidemic

Yesterday, I was on the phone with a friend and she shared what a teacher had
said about kids in her school.

Over the years the teacher has seen the alignment and posture get worse in children.
Plus she is seeing more kids not go to school because of injuries and pain.

The teacher called it – The Muscle Imbalance Epidemic

Wow, I never knew teachers knew about muscle imbalances.

Those are strong words.

But, I must say, I agree with it.

My little way of helping is with Muscle Imbalance Revealed.

I even implemented some of the techniques and exercises from the program
with a lady that I was training in the community centre. She had lumbar instability.

The exercises are not conventional but they work.

The program is very thorough and provides you the knowledge and expertise to help

Knee Pain and Running (Interview)

Sorry, I did not get back to you last week.

I was at a Fitness Conference in Orange County last week.

How Muscle Imbalances Are Causing Your Clients Fitness Plateaus

The feedback for Muscle Imbalances Revealed has started to roll in:

“I just started to watch the Muscle Imbalances Revealed webinars...I was going to watch just a few minutes since I'm beaten up from long day of training, but it was so amazing that I ended up watching the whole thing,,,I did fall asleep here and there, though...WOW great information!!!

I am very thrilled with what's covered and how it's presented.

The video reminded me the importance of the hip and pelvis relationship, once again.

I loved the detailed of all the assessments presented in the video and how to interpreted it.

I will watch it again tomorrow without falling asleep...I loved it! Thank you. - NB”

Have You Done this Before?

I locked myself in a coffee shop bathroom yesterday.

Hip Muscle Imbalances <---- What I Was Working on In the Coffee Shop

The person before me must have broken the door knob and not let anyone know. I spent 17 minutes using my Mac Gyver skills to get out.

I got a chuckle and so did the rest of the coffee shop.

Okay, lets talk about muscle imbalances.

I went to a new hair dresser on Monday.

She was talking to me about muscle imbalances. Kind of funny that she brought it up. She let me know she has been a hair dresser for 27 years and the muscle imbalances she has developed has lead to chronic injuries and having to stop running.

I was paying her to cut my hair but I ended up giving her a number of ideas on how she could address her muscle imbalances in order to get rid of her chronic injuries and get back to running.

At the end of the hair cut, I wondered who should be paying who.

The funny thing, the project I was working on a the coffee shop is on muscle imbalances. Here is a sneak peak into it:

Great Exercises to Daily to Prevent Injuries

I am at 150 Mile House in Northern British Columbia at a family friend’s house.

I was checking my phone messages and a friend called me looking for some hockey conditioning services. I will get back to that in a minute.

Since I am on the road, it is tough get a workout in especially when you are running after a 2.5 year old and making sure the dog doesn’t run for the hills.

There are little things that I have added into my day that help prevent injuries and help eliminate the aches and pains of life.

One thing I do is mobility exercises.

Making sure that my ankle, knees, hips, back and shoulders have good range of motion and normal movement in them has been very important.

Often times I try to do this as a game with my son.

Now back to the hockey conditioning. I have friend in Delta / Tsawwassen that has a son that is looking for some summer hockey conditioning. Let me know if you are a trainer in this area (Delta/Tsawwassen) and can help get this boy to the next level.

One more thing, he does have a shoulder issue so do let me know if you have taken the
Exercise Rehabilitation of the Shoulder course.

Talk to you soon.

Off to chase my son.

Rick Kaselj

P.S. – Make sure to check out Exercises for Injuries blog. I am working hard to put up three posts a week on a variety of topic that will help you out.

You Are Doing the Lats Pulldown All Wrong!

A quick email for you today.

Click Here ==> Do You Make this Mistake?

I was in the gym last week and I saw a personal trainer taking a client through an exercise program.

I watched and listen to the cueing she gave her client about doing the lats pulldown.

I wanted to say something but I didn't.

If I did say something, this is what I would have said:

A TV Producer Called Me

WoW, I just got a call from a TV producer from Florida.

She saw the Exercises for Injuries blog and all the YouTube videos that I have been done on injuries and exercises. She was saying that this information is so important for baby boomers. All baby boomers have some kind of lingering injury that they need to deal with in order to live a full and pain-free life.

It was very cool to get this kind of a phone call.

Since I am in Canada, she did not think it was a good fit for me to come down to Florida to be on their show.

Too bad.

It does show that having a deep understanding, being able to assess injuries and understanding the best exercises for injuries is a big trend that is coming in the fitness industry. I know we are going to hear more and more about this in the years to come.

I am so glad that I am able to share this information with you through the blog, webinars and live courses.

Speaking of live courses. This weekend I am presenting the Exercise Rehabilitation of the Upper Body courses. I will be presenting on exercises for shoulder, lower back, neck and arm injuries.

It should be great. There are people coming from Winnipeg, Calgary, 100 Mile House, Kamloops, Powell River and all over metro Vancouver. It is going to be great to share and help all of these fitness professionals.

I do have three spots left for the courses this weekend if you still want to attend:

Exercise Rehabilitation of the Upper Body Courses <== 3 Spots Left

For those that can't make it to the live courses because they are reading this in South Africa (Hey, Robert), North Carolina (Yo, Noriko) or Pitt Meadows (Hi, Naiana), I got some great information on the blog for you:

Movement Pattern Assessment

I think that is it. Off to put the final touches on few extra things for those that attended the Core Stability of Hip webinar.

I Hurt One of My Clients

I was training one of my clients and hurt her knee.

It just happened a few days ago.

I gave her a sumo squat and it flared up her knee.

I got her to stop the exercise but it was bugging me on why the sumo squat flared up her knee so I hit the books.

Well not the book, the journals, and found the answer.

==> To Leg Press or Squat if You have an ACL Injury?

Next time I trained her, we used some of the modification that I go through in the article and she was fine to continue doing squatting exercises.

Got to love good research.

Hiking from Mexico to Canada

I have done some crazy stuff in my short life.

I flew to Winnipeg for the weekend and ran a marathon.

Then I moved to Penticton and trained for the Ironman Triathlon.

But the craziest thing I have ever done was spend 5 month hiking 4300 kilometres.

Crazy = Hiking 4300 kilometres in 5 Months <== See the Funny Pictures of Me

Myself and 2 other friends started in San Diego and walked a half-marathon 6 times a week until we got to Manning Park in Canada.

It was crazy but a very memorable adventure!

Other than having to fend off biting ants, killer mosquitos and hungry bears, the toughest thing was managing all the injuries we got.

Many of the concepts I discovered on the long hike, I use today.
I have been asked to do a talk on the hike. I don't present this slideshow very often but next Tuesday I am presenting it at the Chilliwack Library.

Here are the details:

A Walk to Remember: The Pacific Crest Trail
Tuesday, May 4th
7:00pm-8:30pm

Chilliwack Library
45860 First Avenue
Chilliwack, BC V2P 7K1
Phone (604) 792-1941

The talk if free and I guarantee it will be funny.

P.S. - The craziest thing I have done was walk from the Mexican Boarder back to Canada. No joke, have a look:

4 Things I Learned About Plantar Fasciitis and Exercise

My blog guy is amazing.

Last Wednesday, I had to take down the ExercisesForInjuries.com blog.
I was having all kinds of server issues. My blog guy thought there maybe a 10% change that he would be able to save everything that was on the server.

He DID!

It has taken him four days to fix it. I am not looking forward to getting his bill but I am super happy the blog is up and going again.

Now onto plantar fasciitis exercises.

I did a bit of web surfing for exercises for plantar fasciits.

The stuff on the internet sucks.

They have all these boring stretches. Most are not effective and done incorrectly.

Over the last few days I have been digging in the research to check to seeing what I have been doing for plantar fasciitis is correct.

Well some of it is correct but there is so much that I am doing wrong.
Here are a few things I found in the research about plantar fasciitis:
- Three steps that are forgotten in a plantar fasciitis exercise program that are vital for pain-free success

- What is the most effective way of stretching the plantar fascia, weight bearing or non-weight bearing exercises?

- What is the best strategy for people that have had plantar fasciitis for greater than 10 months?

- Are you wasting your time stretching the calf with a client that has plantar fasciitis?

I will be revealing the details of what I found on the Plantar Fasciitis & Exercise this Friday.

==> Learn More About Plantar Fasciitis and Exercise

Take care.

Rick Kaselj, MS

P.S. - This Friday I am doing a webinar on Plantar Fasciitis and Exercise. I have found a number of things in the research that has changed what I do when it comes to exercises for client's with plantar fasciitis.

Knee Injury Exercise Video For You

I am off to Indianapolis for the weekend.

My brother is a huge college basketball fan.

Somehow he got tickets to the NCAA March Madness Final Four. The games on Friday and Monday. So cool.

Since his wife could not go due to work, I was the alternate.

It will be great to be spending some time with my brother. A full life always gets in the way of spending enough time with family.

While I am in Indianapolis, I am meeting up with the presenter that I am hosting on December 11 & 12.

Everyone that attended the Eric Cressey course last weekend, knows who it is.

Speaking of Eric Cressey, here is a little video from last weekend. It was amazing. So much incredible information.

== Knee Injury Exercises

The presenter that is coming to Vancouver in December is going to talk about knee and lower back injuries.

What I could use is some questions to ask him?

If you have a knee or back question you want me to ask him, just reply back to this email and I will ask him.

I think that is it.

Have a great day.

Look Who Walked Through the Door - Lumbar Fusion Exercises

I never know what is going to walk through the door.

Since I am the exercise and injury guy, I get it all.

A few days ago, I had a back fusion client come in.

I kind of chuckled when I say him as I just finished up doing a bunch of research for tomorrow's Lower Back Spinal Fusion and Exercise webinar.

==> Lumbar Fusion Exercises

Since it was our first session, he was a bit leery of what exercises to do.

Since I just put together a workout for tomorrows webinar, I had one ready for him.

Before I wrap up this email, I just wanted to share with you a tip when working with a lumbar spinal fusion client.

Don’t do the lower back extension machine.

Your client does not need the strength to do this movement.

What I do is work on the isometric activation and endurance of the lower back muscles. I do this with upper body exercise machines.

For example, I will get him to do the seat row machine. I will modify the technique by adding a step to the exercise. Prior to performing the rowing movement, I will get him to lift some or all of his weight off the chest pad. He holds this position and then does his set of rowing exercises.

Lifting the chest partially or fully, activates the lower back muscles. Holding this position works on the lower back muscle in an isometric contraction and since there is no change in the joint angle of the lumbar spine, it is a safe exercise for a client recovering from a lumbar spinal fusion.

I will chat about what I do for the weight for this exercise, tomorrow.

I hope this helps.

We will see some of you on tomorrows Lower Back Spinal Fusion and Exercise webinar.
